Designing an Optimal Tablet User Experience (Panel Discussion)

As more and more enterprise apps are being delivered on tablets, designing mobile applications is becoming commonplace for user experience professionals. However, designing effective tablet apps is far from trivial. The move from the web to tablets is exposing important new design challenges.

A panel of local experts with experience in designing enterprise-level mobile applications on tablets will discuss the key challenges and opportunities in designing for a tablet. The panel will begin with a brief introductory statement by each panelist followed by a discussion among the panelists and a Q&A session for the audience.

About the Panelists

Abhi Muthiyan (Patagonia Health)

  • Abhi is a co-founder and CTO at Patagonia Health, and the architect behind their health care IT platform. The platform is unique in the health care IT industry. It follows the smart phone app model.
  • Abhi will talk about the usability needs in healthcare, how physicians and clinical staff use tablets, how tablet usage differs from  laptop/desktop usage, the need to minimize training,  and patient safety issues.
Art Swanson (Allscripts)
  • Art Swanson is the Director of User Experience for Allscripts Healthcare solutions.
  • Mapping tablet experience from the physical transitions through space in a physician's practice, Art will discuss the research and design of a tablet application for healthcare. Art's team performed user research and modeled the tablet navigation and interaction model by using natural breakpoints in the physician's transition through the various spaces in the practice.
Cory Lown (NCSU)
  • Cory is the digital technologies development librarian at NCSU Libraries, where he contributes to the design and development of projects such as the library's mobile website and other projects that enhance access and use of library resources and services.
  • Cory will discuss what he learned from adapting the design of WolfWalk (a location-aware photographic guide to the history of North Carolina State University's buildings) from a native iPhone app to a native iPad app. Additionally, he will talk about using media queries for building a jQuery Mobile site for phones and tablets.

Kevin Stillwell (Lexis Nexis)
  • Kevin Stilwell is VP of Global Mobility at LexisNexis, a leading global provider of content-enabled workflow solutions for legal and professional markets. Kevin is responsible for development of mobile apps that provide access to the legal content offered by LexisNexis.
  • LexisNexis users demanded an iPad app to complement the recently launched Lexis Advance legal research product. Kevin will discuss the process used to understand customer need and the design of the Lexis Advance iPad app to take advantage of the iPad user experience.
